FAVOURITE FEMALES OF JAZZ “Up Close & Personal” Sunday May 15, 2016

7:00 pm @ The Ironwood Stage & Grill

So many great tunes have been sung by female jazz legends. Do you have a  favourite?  It is very difficult to choose just one of the many but we each have done just that!

The Favourite Females of Jazz concept shows by the Calgary Women in Jazz collective have become very popular in Calgary, and each sold out show is greatly anticipated by the many fans. The show began several years ago when Cafe Koi hosted their anti-Stampede week called Koi Words & Music Rodeo. The Favourite Females of Jazz night was so well received that the group decided to make it an annual event. They have performed the show at other venues in Calgary, including the Cliff Bungalow Jazz Concert series. This year, the women are honoured to present their “new show” at The Ironwood Stage & Grill.

Join us for an evening of live interviews as Deanne Matley performs as host to discover and uncover deep, dark secrets of both the historic singers and the CWIJ women. Watch the interviews unfold as they sit in comfy chairs giving the audience that “like you’re in your living room” feeling ... up close and personal. “There may even be a dance off” says Matley. “This will be like a live television show, filled with fun tidbits, prizes and more, and where the audience is engaged!”

Hear songs done by the great jazz vocalists of history and today, like Diana Krall, Ernestine Anderson, Diane Schuur, Carmen McRae, and Rosemary Clooney. We promise you an evening of variety and enjoyment!

For this evening, the women are eagerly anticipating being able to work with the remarkable Mark Limacher on piano, “smilin’” Robin Tufts on drums, and Jason Valleau of the Polyjesters on bass.

Phone The Ironwood @ 403-269-5581 for reservations. The Ironwood has amazing food–go for dinner and stay for the show ($20). Tickets available the night of the show at The Ironwood.

In honour of International Women’s Day Calgary Women in Jazz present “Women Celebrating Women” an evening of music  This year’s performance is hosted by Mary Moran, President and CEO of Calgary Economic Development, and will again be held at The Ironwood Stage & Grill, 1229 9 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB. The show features prominent Calgary singers, song-writers, and composers: Mary Boyes, Mari Jo de Waal, Glennis Houston, Lorna MacLachlan, Viviane Martin, Deanne Matley, Deb Rasmussen, and Valdine Schroeder. Backing them up are a group of highly regarded Calgary musicians: pianist Andrea Petrity, bassist Rubim de Toledo, and drummer John de Waal.

Calgary’s International Women’s Day concert was originally inspired by the long-running Women’s day show in Vancouver. The group of Calgary friends – who have formalized their group name as “Calgary Women In Jazz” – had already joined forces for their highly-regarded “Favourite Females of Jazz” and their “Six Babes a-Singin” concerts previously, so it was not a stretch to create the inaugural Women’s Day show in Calgary in 2013. It has now become an annual fund-raising affair, greatly anticipated by the followers of the group.

This year, a portion of the proceeds will be in support of “The Women’s Centre.” The selection of this charity aligns with the theme of International Women’s Day this year – “Pledge for Parity.” This year, it seems especially important to offer assistance due to the reported 300% increase in crisis calls to the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter and a reported spike in domestic violence. Food bank usage is also up dramatically.

Hopefully women around the world will be taking time out for themselves and celebrating on Tuesday, March 8th. This group of women will be celebrating with music. Men are welcome, of course!  #pledgeforparity
